Description  
ORIGINAL ARTWORK 
An icon of the Alabama wading birds, the great blue heron (Area herodias) is represented across three damp and verdant lake systems. Inspired in the vein of Audubon, Lear, and other 19th Century Naturalists, the herons are represented in watercolor with acute attention to detail. 

The posture and behavior of the herons were studied in the field to develop a sense for the body and develop composition. Photographic reference was used later in the studio to ensure accurate markings and color. Freed from the restraint archetypal representation inherent in naturalist illustration, the minutiae of individuality has been explored across the three birds in facial and beak markings as well as body and leg coloration.

Contrary to the Age of Reason that the Naturalist work was originally founded, these herons are each seemingly canonized with ephemeral 23 karat gold halos. 

Artwork is framed and matted with museum grade glass. 

ABOUT THE ARTIST: 

Sophie McVicar is a visual artist whose work celebrates the gentle beauties and tragedies of nature. Receiving degrees in both art, B.F.A., and chemistry, B.S., McVicar’s works thoughtfully speak to her scientific training. In the vein of 19th century Naturalist paintings, her subjects are brought to life in watercolor with critical accuracy but blended with the emotive context of the animal. Religious overlays challenge how we view animals in the post-Enlightenment era, echoing their former lives as beasts of archetypal signs and meanings. McVicar currently lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama.

Returns Policy

RETURNS: Full priced merchandise may be returned within 7 days of purchase, pick-up or delivery for a full refund.
Merchandise must be in the same condition as the time of purchase. Merchandise may be returned up to 14 days for a full store credit. NO RETURN AFTER 14 DAYS.
CLEARANCE ITEMS: All clearance items are final sale.
SPECIAL ORDERS: Special orders cannot be cancelled once placed. Availability of merchandise is estimated. Urban Home Market will make all possible efforts to work with vendor delays.

Shipping

DELIVERY: Local deliveries and are available throughout Alabama, Southern Tennessee, West Georgia, and East Mississippi. Mileage rates apply. Delivered items returned after day of delivery may be subject to a pick-up fee. We can move, haul-away or rearrange existing furniture with advance notice in our Installation+ package. There is an additional fee for this service and must be scheduled in advance.
Shipping: Shipping is available for items outside of the local delivery area. Third-party shipping rates apply.
Pick-up items: Buyers assume all responsibility/risk of items that are picked-up and transported. It is the buyer’s responsibility to check merchandise for any damage prior to leaving Urban Home Market. Claims for damages will not be accepted once the merchandise leaves Urban Home Market. No Urban staff member is allowed to tie down/secure merchandise for traveling.
